Artist Sally Hewett Explores Various States of Undress Through Hoops

The nude embroidery of Sally Hewett, an artist based in the United Kingdom, is not what people would expect to see within the confines of the craft's hoops. Each nude embroidery work depicts sculptural body parts that have been given simple yet realistic details with the help of thread. Some of these details are grotesque such as butt pimples and hairy nipples whereas others are simply expected, for instance when it comes to dimples and pubic hair.

Through her series of nude embroidery, Hewett explores the idea of beauty and the sacrifices people make in the name of it. She writes, "A large number of women and men submit their bodies to extraordinary procedures in the name of convention or beauty--liposuction, implants, scarification, surgery, laser treatment, electrolysis etc."
