NEXT Architects designed a pedestrian bridge for Changsha, China and it won a competition for its innovation. The 150-meter bridge spans the Dragon King Harbor River in the Meixi Lake district and it was built from scratch.
The structure has undulating steel ribbons that flow across the lake, creating a never-ending surface that is often compared to a Möbius strip. Architect John van de Water said, "It refers to a Chinese knot that comes from an ancient decorative Chinese folk art." It creates three different routes across the water and lighting fixtures illuminate the structure after sundown making it glow in the darkness.
The design is truly original and NEXT architects made it a reality. Innovative designs are the way of the future and when projects like this come through one can only wonder what the designers of tomorrow will come up with.
