The main purposes of reworking this modern apartment design by Coffey Architects was to unify two separate units into a harmonious living space. The two units were originally stacked one on top of another, part of a historic structure in Clerkenwell, London. In order to join the two disconnected spaces, one of the major design decisions included introducing a large storage wall that spans from the floor of the first apartment to the ceiling of the second. To make sure this detail could be seen, the architects placed a glass floor alongside the shelf, so that the continuity could easily be seen between the two floors.
As well as breaking up the space visually, the large storage wall also served to section off different public and private areas of the residence.
