Mirrored Cuboid Cabins

'The Lookout' Blends and Reflects the Surrounding Landscape

Designed by architecture students at Glasgow's Strathclyde University, 'The Lookout' is a mirrored cabin located in the Trossachs National Park in Scotland. The mirrored design is intended to both frame and reflect the views of the picturesque Loch Lomond and its surrounding glens.

The project, which was designed for a government-funded program by the Scottish Scenic Routes Initiative, features a wood-framed pavilion with various elevations that serve as a framing device for the landscape.

To create the exterior, mirrored stainless steel was laminated onto ply sheets made of birch wood. The result is a structure that creates shifting reflections, causing it to blend with its surroundings. The long facade of the cuboid structure features a void containing a bench for two. Another opening holds a smaller, single seat. The seats are fashioned out of a thermally treated African hardwood, which was planed into Japanese-style slatted surfaces.
