Efficient Barnyard Abodes

This Mid-Century Home Maximizes Personal Space

Dorrington Atcheson Architects have designed the 'Easterbrook House,' a mid-century home in New Zealand that has been modernized in way that ensures minimal impact to the surrounding landscape.

The architects were inspired by the pragmatic forms of structures such as tents and sheds, creating a set of compact buildings that optimize for space using a mono-pitch roof and full-height glazing. These, along with other features such as a sunken lounge and convertible bunk beds, allow for a space-efficient environment that feels twice its size. The site, thought small, is a reclusive spot with plenty of sun exposure and beautiful views.

Inside, the architects made sure to include rustic-looking materials such as plywood, concrete and aluminum, adding to the effortless, casual vibe of the barn-like abode.
