Michelle Forsyth Ethereally Commemorates Tragic Events

Michelle Forsyth creates whimsical art installations that revolve around the idea of floating flowers. As ethereally innocent as her art project seem, there is nevertheless a dark inspiration behind them. For instance, Michelle Forsyth's piece simply titled Drift is inspired by the Swiss Air Flight 111 crash. Comprised of hundreds of tiny paper-cut blossoms held in place with the use of eye hooks from above and below, Drift mimics the subtle current of water with the slight transference of air.

Canopy, on the other hand, is influenced by the forest fires that ravaged southern Maine in 1947. Michelle Forsyth photographed the hardest hit areas in the town of Waterboro and echoed the colors of regrowth in the paper flowers and leaves she suspended from a ceiling.
