David Adjaye Pays Tribute to Trumpeter Hugh Masekela

A simple memorial pavilion has been erected in Johannesburg, in honor of jazz musician Hugh Masekela, better known by his alias Bra Hugh. Located in Westpark Cemetery, the structure has been designed and built by British-Ghanian architect David Adjaye who was commissioned by Hugh's family.

For the construction of the memorial pavilion, the designer used pre-cast concrete. The overall minimalism of the structure allows for a thoughtful reflection of Bra Hugh's talent and life, while it does not undermine the natural presence and the setting of the cemetery. These types of structures are inherently important to culture in Africa. On this note, David Adjaye shared with Dezeen that "African monuments are a place of gathering and reflection, they help us edify the significance of our ancestors, our heritage and culture."
