The making of the gin liqueur involves infusing and smoking the alcohol with maple, which gives it a golden color and notes of butterscotch, caramel, burnt orange and honeycomb. The expression was created to pay tribute to the maple sugaring process that has happened across North America for hundreds of centuries.
The Sipsmith Black Maple Gin Liqueur is exclusively available through the bi-monthly subscription service—nine litres of maple sap is required to produce one litre of maple syrup.
The spirit was announced by the London-based gin producer on February 13th to coincide with Pancake Day, which happens just before the start of Lent. As such, Sipsmith notes that its Black Maple Gin Liqueur "may just tempt you to break your Lent."
