Libeskind Constructs Iconic Physics Center for Durham University

In response to a competition in July 2013 to design a building for physics researchers at the Durham University in London, New York City-based Polish architect Daniel Libeskind has created the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics at a cost of £10 million. The architect, taking inspiration from the university itself is a historic symbol, adds that the new building will be a new, iconic facility that will make a mark in the academic world. Libeskind is known for his master plan for Ground Zero in New York.

The head of Durham’s physics department Martin Ward says, "this new building will provide a tremendously stimulating environment and foster even closer synergies between the two Institutes’ research areas."

The exterior of the building is extremely modern and is designed to be angular, with glass panels fitted among a seemingly wooden-clad structure. The landmark building is due for completion in 2015.
