Following this year's New York Pride parade, governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled the design for the city's first LGBTQ monument to honor its bustling queer community.
Brooklyn-based artist Anthony Goicolea designed the outdoor tribute, which is comprised of nine boulders divided with laminated borosilicate glass. This glass will reflect the sunlight, creating a multitude of rainbow patterns on the ground below it, forming, what the artist is calling "a garden of rainbows." This sweet and thoughtful permanent installation is intended to stand as a memorial for the 49 people who died in Orlando's Pulse nightclub last year, as well as pay tribute to victims of anti-LGBTQ hate crimes.
This public monument will be hosted in Hudson River Park in Greenwich Village, a location chosen for its history as a meeting place for the LGBTQ community.
