Paradise could very well be described as a village on Hawaii's Big Island, and Kauhale Kai, a private home located in the same place, brings that paradise onto its own grounds. Rather than being part of a village, the home, designed by De Reus Architects, is a village unto itself.
Kauhale Kai is made up of several relatively small pavilions. These pavilions are connected to one another by small gardens, a pool, and concrete walkways, with the overall impression being one of a locale village by the ocean. Though the pavilions, with their sharply angled roofs, are solid and modern, De Reus Architects based them off of the small thatched huts that populate villages known as kauhale.
