Circular Safety-Focused Washrooms

Tadao Ando Designed a Complementary Toilet in Jingu-Dori Park

In an effort to improve Tokyo's public facilities, a non-profit organization called the Nippon Foundation partnered with architect Tadao Ando to devise new washroom facilities in the Jingu-Dori Park.

The resulting building boasts a modern look that's complete with metal paneling and a large disc-shaped roof. The circular building hosts both men's and women's facilities, and also includes an accessible washroom. The toilets, as well as the external sinks, are surrounded by metal beams—providing the building's inhabitants with plenty of privacy while also keeping it open to the beautiful environment that surrounds it. Ando spoke to these design elements, stating, "Visitors can move inside a cylindrical wall of vertical louvres to feel the comfort of the wind and light from the surrounding environment."
