Biodegradable Fiber Chairs

The Jin Chair Uses Flax Fiber and Bio Resin to Create a Beautiful Chair

The Jin chair is an award winning seat made biodegradable flax fibers and resin. Created by Japanese designer Jin Kuramoto, this stylish and ecological chair was recently named best in show at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. The idea of a flax fiber chair was commissioned by Swedish furniture company Offecct, as a way to create a lightweight, biodegradable and sturdy chair. The Jin chair is the latest piece of furniture to come out of Offecct Labs, and fits the company's ethos of developing and researching new materials for possible furniture trends.

The flax fiber used to make the Jin chair is traditionally used as a material in tea bags, banknotes and cigarette rolling papers. This presented a bit of a challenge to Kuramoto, but thanks to the designers ingenuity a truly amazing chair was built. Kuramoto's method for building this chair involved shaping thin flax fiber layers on top of one another and using resin to solidify the entire structure. Both the flax fiber and resin are completely biodegradable making the Jin chair a completely biological piece of furniture.
