Belgian artist and sculptor Jan Fabre is to present a collection of intricate and strangely alluring marble sculptures of the human brain. The cerebral carvings will be unveiled at the Galerie Daniel Templon in Brussels in an exhibition titled 'Do we feel with our brain and think with our heart?'
The exhibition delves into the mysteries of the human mind, a topic of both creative and intellectual interest to Jan Fabre, who studied neurology for over a decade. Fabre cultivated a special interest in the work of Italian neurobiologist Giacomo Rizzolatti, who discovered 'mirror neurons,' which have been isolated as the brain cells that enable the human capacity for empathy.
Fabre decided to work with white carrera marble to investigate the human brain's shape, carving intricate cortex, lobes and arteries from the shiny white material. Rather than simply sculpt brains however, Fabre also integrates random objects including food items, kitchen utensils and large insects into the sculptures.
