Massive Ice Basilicas

This Ice Replica of the Sagrada Familia is Pretty Stunning

Students from the Eindhoven University of Technology have constructed an incredible scaled-down ice replica of the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, one of many Gaudi masterpieces dotting that city. Just like the original landmark, construction on the ice replica wasn't completed by the time it was set to open. However that's of secondary importance because the main point of the project was to investigate the use of ice as a building material.

Construction on this ice replica of the Sagrada Familia began on December 28 and was supposed to be completed by January 24. However, inclement weather and other setbacks meant the highest dome was incomplete.

Regardless, the structure's other completed towards are 21 meters high, making it an impressive engineering achievement and one that could inspire more widespread investigation into the use of ice as a building material.
