Matsuyama-based architect Takashi Okuno designed the 'House of Nagahama,' a single-storey home framed in timber.
Located in Japan's Ehime Prefecture, the home features a floorplan that orients itself around five gardens and terraces. Each of the rooms, which utilize local materials, open up to a separate outdoor space. The architect explains, "Taking advantage of the spacious site, I placed five gardens, each one with a different atmosphere, which are all designed to ensure privacy."
At the center of the residence lies a living room featuring a distinct pitched roof made from exposed wooden joists. Four separate wings are positioned around the living room, with gardens slotted into the free spaces between rooms. In order to accentuate certain spaces and understate others, the architect played with the amount of light that filtered into the home.
