To combat the lack of diversity in architecture Autodesk, maker of computer aided design software CAD, is launching a new program called Hip Hop Architecture Camp to showcase the field to a more diverse group. The program stems from a 2016 partnership with the Urban Arts Collective, an organization dedicated to exposing underrepresented communities to careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math. The organization was cofounded by architect Mike Ford who wrote his graduate thesis on the concept of Hip Hop-inspired architecture and how architecture could borrow from the musical movement.
The Hip Hop Architecture Camp hopes to blend the concepts of music with the architectural medium in a way that will have kids affecting the communities they live and grew up in. A particular focus of the camp is to reconceptualize urban planning as the practice hasn't often benefited the people of color that inhabit them. Hip Hop Architecture camp is currently available in 16 communities across the US and Canada and is free and geared towards student ages 10 through 17.
