GlucoSense is a new system, developed by a team of researchers at the University of Leeds, that will make it possible for diabetes patients to monitor their glucose levels without having to put themselves through unpleasant and invasive procedures.
To use the system, patients simply place a small pad of their finger against a glass window against the device. A low-powered laser beam is projected through a window and onto their finger, with some of the light absorbed by glucose and some reflected back down onto the window.
The great thing about GlucoSense is that the underlying technology will make it possible for people with diabetes to receive continuous readings, allowing them to also get instant alerts when some kind of medical intervention is needed. This will allow people to regulate their own medical condition and reduce instances of emergency hospital treatment.
