Although many advances have to been made in the field of aerodynamics toward creating effective, fuel-driven aircraft, the Gamera II chopper is taking flying back to its roots by using human power to take it to the skies.
The giant helicopter is powered by cranking two pedals, similar to a bicycle, that the operator turns while sitting in a seat beneath the wings. The machine has four of these 'wings' that somewhat resemble large pieces of scaffolding and have a helicopter blade that spins horizontally attached to each one. Peddling thus spins these blades and helps the aircraft take off from the ground.
It is still early along in the development process and as such, can only stay in flight for under a minute -- meaning that it is not the most reliable mode of transport for a long haul.
