FujiwaraMuro Architects has designed a house in the rural town of Tokushima, Japan, that uses a classic architectural concept in order to overcome the natural limitations of the property on which it's built. The home's roof is replete with several dormers, providing an ample source of natural light for the interior where the house would otherwise be dark and dreary.
FujiwaraMuro Architects chose to use dormers because of the lay of the land. Though the ground floor of the home has many floor-to-ceiling windows, these windows don't let in very much light. The house is surrounded by a grassy knoll that shields it from the noise and views of a highway and industrial building on the southern end of the property. The downside of this knoll is that it also blocks light, so the architects used dormers on the roof to overcome that issue.
