This Installation Features Flying Kites That Generate Light & Energy

Icoon Afsluitdijk is a beautifully innovative new art installation, designed by none other than Daan Roosegaarde, that will feature a series of illuminated flying kites that won't just look great but will also generate energy. The installation is set to be located over an enclosed 32-kilometer dyke and roadway that is designed to protect the low-lying nation of Holland from flooding.

This installation will make use of lightweight plastic kites equipped with steel cables. They are designed to be able to stay in the air for weeks at a time and can be flown at altitudes of up to 300 meters.

What's great about the Icoon Afsluitdijk project is that it uses flying kites to reinvigorate an old structure, and is a great example of modern creativity and design being used to revitalize venerable old architectural projects that may have lost their aesthetic sheen.
