The Fluted lantern is a portable lighting concept by Benjamin Mtonya that reimagines everyday lighting through furniture-inspired materials and construction. Created for people who move frequently between homes, the design emphasizes atmosphere as well as portability. An upward-facing light source diffuses through fluted glass to produce a warm ambient glow, while maple, leather and polished steel give the object a residential character rather than the appearance of conventional portable electronics.
A detachable leather carrying strap transitions into an internal leather spine, creating the appearance of a continuous structural element running through the lantern. The concept was developed around the idea of supporting "domestic nomads" by bringing a familiar lighting experience into different environments. Fluted received a Student Notable recognition at the 2026 Design Awards.
