Five Fragmented Cubes is a large-scale steel sculpture designed by Michael Jantzen as a structure that can be entered and walked through. The installation is composed of ten cube frames arranged in two stacked tiers, with five forming the base and five positioned above. The upper cubes are clad in painted steel panels, each divided into triangular sections that are folded outward and inward to project into space.
The triangular panels are rotated at varying angles across each face, creating a non-repeating surface pattern across the structure. Two staircases provide access to an elevated walkway constructed from perforated steel grating, allowing movement through the interior volume. Tubular railings define the circulation path, separating it from the surrounding panels. Light enters through the gaps between folded elements, changing as visitors move through the structure. The sculpture is constructed from painted steel and positioned on a concrete base.

Five Fragmented Cubes Uses Folded Panels to Create an Immersive Design
Trend Themes
-
Modular Walkable Art — A trend toward large-scale, enterable sculptures that combine art and circulation could enable reconfigurable public installations that blur infrastructure and attraction.
-
Folded Panel Facades — Complex folded-metal paneling applied at scale suggests opportunities for prefabricated, geometric cladding systems that deliver lightweight structure and bold surface texture.
-
Light-responsive Structural Surfaces — Surfaces composed of rotated, perforated, and angled elements create shifting daylight and shadow patterns that open possibilities for dynamic environmental control and experiential lighting without electronics.
Industry Implications
-
Public Spaces & Urban Planning — Placemaking driven by sculptural, walkable installations points to new forms of pedestrian infrastructure that function as both civic amenity and destination.
-
Architectural Facade Manufacturing — Demand for folded, triangulated steel panels indicates potential for factory-fabricated, customizable facade modules that reduce onsite labor and material waste.
-
Entertainment & Experiential Design — Immersive, navigable sculptures suggest novel venue types where spatialized form and light become core components of branded, ticketed experiences.
