Cord-Varnished Seating

The Fishline Chair by Nendo Uses an Unorthodox Staining Technique

The minimalist structure and silhouette of the Fishline Chair may be deceiving, but the design is far from simple. The name of the seat hints at its uniqueness, but even that is quite ambiguous. What does fishing have to do with a wooden chair? Well, the Fishline Chair isn't inspired by fishing. Instead, a fishing tool was used in the design process.

Nendo, the creative and clever studio behind the Fishline Chair, endeavored to seek a new way to finish wooden surfaces besides the typical varnish and paint. It came up with a completely unorthodox technique involving, that's right, a fishing line. Essentially, the Fishline Chair was wound tightly with dyed fishing line, which resulted in a varnish-like shine and a slight tint. It also allowed the wood grain to pop out.
