Cheeky Feminine Hygiene Commercials

The Hilarious 'Camp Gyno' Ad Satirizes That Time of the Month

Feminine hygiene commercials typically target young adult women between the ages of 20-30, showing them playing tennis, going for a bike ride, and dancing in full, flowing skirts, all without the discomfort of irksome hygiene products. A new commercial from tampon distributor Hello Flo, however, tackles a different age group: young girls.

The commercial features a 12 year-old girl at camp for the first time. She gets her period, and suddenly all the other girls who had previously ignored her start to ask her for tampons and menstrual advice. However, this girl's popularity goes straight to her head, leading to the girls seeking out other ways to get their feminine necessities delivered to their cabins.

The writing for the commercial is absolutely hilarious, while the young woman cast in the lead role shows off a spunky, potty-mouthed side that we don't often associate with 12 year-old girls. Some of the more spectacular one-liners include: "The red badge of courage!" and "I became the camp gyno."

With commercials like this, young women will be encouraged to talk about something that happens to every girl at some point. Instead of feeling ashamed, young girls will be upfront about their time of the month, treating it like the "red badge of courage" that it is.
