Schmidt Hammer Lassen Designs a Library in New Zealand

Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen collaborates with local firm Architectus on an earthquake-resistant building in New Zealand. The new addition is one of nine planned public facilities for the city. In 2011, the Christchurch Central Library suffered immense damages due to an earthquake. The new design of the structure is strategically arranged to withstand the destructive powers of the natural phenomenon.

Dubbed 'Turanga,' Schmidt Hammer Lassen's earthquake-resistant building boasts a golden screen facade, concrete walls, and an "integrated, self-centering mechanism" which will allow it to adapt should disaster strike. The design is supported by pre-tensioned steel cables that bind together the wall and the foundation of the library.
