Derek Henderson Waitoa Slaughter House Series is Disturbingly Well Done

The Derek Henderson Waitoa Slaughter House series investigates a truthful portrayal of workers in a slaughterhouse. New Zealand-born photographer Derek Henderson is renowned for both his commercial and editorial work. Yet, this series is very different from Henderson’s former work.

Inspired by growing during the 1970s in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand and having many of his friends working at slaughter houses, Henderson, "always wondered what it was like working in these places and how they could slaughter large animals day in day out without it affecting them."

Henderson’s portraits of employees of the Waitoa Slaughter House capture their honest form. Each subject is in a different degree of blood splatter, yet all of them provide the camera with the same stoic chill.
