Floating Stone Apartments

These Contemporary Dwellings are Located on an Artificial Waterway

'David Chipperfield Architects' recently designed a series of contemporary dwellings that appear to float on an artificial waterway. While stone is often thought of as cold and heavy, the material can take on a delicate quality when placed in the right environment. These floating apartments demonstrate that stone can be used to create a modern aquatic city.

The 'Xixi Wetland Estate' was originally designed for the offices of the Xixi National Wetland Park. The complex sits on an artificial waterway and features 20 duplex apartments. Each of the contemporary dwellings sits on a grey podium, which is located directly in the water. The apartments are also surrounded by aquatic planting and water gardens. The layout makes the apartments appear as though they are floating on the water.

The apartment buildings demonstrate the delicate balance between humans and the natural environment.
