Luminescent Cityscape Installations

Lu's City Light Depicts Shanghai's Vibrant Cityscape

Known for his passion for exploring a city’s constructs through representative colors and patterns, Shanghai-based designer Lu Xinjian recently created a visual art piece called City Light, which illustrates Shanghai’s vibrant cityscape with a plethora of colours. The installation was done for the I Love Shanghai exhibition at Art Labor and will be there until January 5th 2014. The artwork was developed through the use of Google Earth imagery of the bustling metropolitan; the result is a vibrant depiction of the very core of Shanghai.

To understand how the installation works, a blue squared light illuminates a network of fluorescent neon tubes that abstractly portrays Shanghai’s city DNA. The piece is run by a flash program and represents the constant transformation, expansion and increasing growth in one of China’s most densely populated cities.
