Haneul Kim & Cinema Chain CGV Created New Lamps from Salvaged Screens

Designer Haneul Kim teamed up with South Korea's largest cinema chain, CGV, to create cinema screen lamps that creatively repurpose an abundant material.

Over the last two years, CGV has had to remove or replace more than 70 of its cinema screens due to damage or theatre closures as a result of the pandemic, and these cinema screens got a new lease on life as illuminators. Naturally, the finely perforated material lends itself well to softly diffusing light. "Looking at these holes in the waste screen, I discovered a visual similarity with the aluminum perforated plate used in industrial materials," Kim described to Dezeen, "I imagined what it would be like to replace the sound emitted through the screen with light."

Now, these cinema screen lamps are being integrated into tables in CGV's premium cinemas.
