Christie's Magazine Documents Collectors and Their Collections

Photographer James Mollison dedicated the inaugural issue of Christie’s magazine to collectors of various kinds. The series' first chapter focuses on collectors and collections in the UK, but it will later continue on to New York, Germany and China.

Mollison places the collector's portrait next to a photograph of their collection, whatever it may be, capturing a distinct harmony between the two. Without an obvious amount of context, the viewer is left to their own devices when it comes to drawing connections between the collector and their collection.

Of course, what each subject collects isn't so much the issue. Collecting something can range anywhere from being a casual hobby to a lifelong pursuit, but it is driven by a need to seek, preserve and archive something of cultural, historical or sentimental significance.
