Reimagined Ancient Chinese Sculptures

Daniel Arsham Reinterprets the Changxin Palace Lantern

Daniel Arsham joins forces with 'National Treasure,' a Chinese television series to reimagine one of ancient China's most important artifacts -- the 'Changxin Palace Lantern.' The new iteration is designed in the designer's signature 'chiaroscuro' tonal style. The sculpture is complete in a white cast before going through a painting process that finishes with a coat of dusted pigments at specific angles to evoke a sense of dramaticism.

In ancient times, the Changxin Palace Lantern is "an elegant gilt bronze lantern used to light the baths in the palace of Empress Dou," explained by the television program. It is a relic that dates all the way back to the Han Dynasty, which is during "206BC-220AD." An original artifact was drawn from the Zhongshan King, Liu Sheng's tomb back in 1968 -- it is currently displayed in China's Hebei museum. The special sculpture comes with a graphic tee that features the designer's reimagined version of the ancient lantern across the front.
