The Celluloid Dreams Photos Capture Historic Single-Screen Theaters

Celluloid Dreams is a decade-long photographic project, put together by Boston photographer Stefanie Klavens, that aims to preserve the memory of historic single-screen theaters. These theaters hark back to Hollywood's golden age of cinema between the 1920s and 1940s, and therefore represent a very important part of American popular culture. However, many of this legendary movie palaces won't last the distance, a fact that motivated Klavens to put together the series.

Klaven's interest in night-time photography prompted her to to shoot many of the theaters from outside in darker conditions, before also capturing the opulent interiors. By using already-available light with very long exposures, Klavens captured details that would otherwise not be noticeable.

The Celluloid Dreams project is set to continue with photographs of theaters planned to be captured across Texas, Chicago and the Midwest.
