UNICEF Spain's Cash Forward Provides Purpose for Unspent Money

UNICEF Spain worked with Oglivy Spain to create Cash Forward, an initiative that gives festival-goers the chance to turn unspent money on cashless wristbands into an opportunity to do good.

Leftover balances, especially small ones, have a habit of going unspent, and Cash Forward turns "invisible" stranded value into something meaningful so that people can redirect what they didn't spend on drinks, food or merch into donations, instead of letting them disappear. "That small balance we sometimes forget or do not claim because the amount is minimal can become something much bigger: an opportunity to guarantee fundamental rights such as education, protection or survival for children around the world," said Soraya Sánchez, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at UNICEF Spain.

At an event, attendees can check their wristband balance through UNICEF Spain and decide whether to donate all, part or a specific amount.

Trend Themes

  1. Micro-donation Monetization — Small, leftover digital balances are being aggregated into meaningful charitable contributions, creating new revenue streams from fractional value.
  2. Invisible-value Recovery — Unclaimed wallet remnants on cashless devices are emerging as a recoverable asset class that can be redirected toward social causes.
  3. Event-based Social Good — On-site donor choices at festivals and gatherings are transforming transient attendance moments into structured philanthropy touchpoints.

Industry Implications

  1. Payments and Fintech — Cashless payment platforms are positioned to embed seamless rounding and redirect features that convert residual funds into purpose-driven flows.
  2. Live Events and Festivals — Event organizers can capitalize on wristband ecosystems to surface latent customer value and integrate cause-based engagement into the attendee experience.
  3. Nonprofit Fundraising — Charitable organizations are seeing opportunities to partner with transaction processors to access micro-donations that scale through high-frequency, low-value interactions.
