Undulating Carbon Pavilions

This Organic Carbon Fiber Structure Disregards Conventional Framework

Carbon fiber is revered for its lightweight properties and this carbon fiber structure from the 'T_ADS team' from the University of Tokyo beautifully shows off what makes this material so desirable as a construction material.

The pavilion uses a combination of steel and carbon fiber rods to support a stretchy membrane. While the steel rods provide low-level ground support, the carbon fiber rods are used to create a complex organic structure that defies the way framework is usually constructed.

To achieve the form of the unique structure, the design team made use of computer programming in order to push the limits of what this material is capable of. As a lightweight structure, this canopy could serve a number of purposes.
