Salvador Román and Adela Mortera have designed a stunningly serene brutalist grotto in the Sisal neighbourhood of Valladolid, Mexico. The 254-square-metre residence explores the perception of space, scale, and materiality through a sculptural and architectural approach evoking the experience of a natural grotto.
Salvador Román and Adela Mortera conceived the house as a contemporary inhabitable sculpture inspired by the geological formations characteristic of the Yucatán Peninsula. This includes caves, grottos, and cenotes. The firm used a restrained material palette drawn directly from the colors and textures found within these natural landscapes.
All in all, the design of the serene brutalist grotto is inspired by the spatial sequence of cenotes and underground caverns, where tunnels, vaulted chambers, and clearings shape a sensory journey.
