Contemporary Brightly Lit Homes

Kiri Architects Creates a Living Space with Social Potential

A brightly lit home, measuring 79 square meters, is shortlisted for the 2022 Dezeen Awards in the Urban House category. The home is located in Nishitōkyō, a city to the west of Tokyo. The space, which is designed for a family of four, was designed by Tokyo-based studio Kiri Architects.

The most striking feature of the brightly lit home is a wooden staircase that "spans the glazed facade of the house" and "acts as a buffer between the living spaces and the windows." In addition to creating a visual appeal and serving as a way for the owners to move between the first and second floors, the staircase is designed to fulfill a social purpose. Kiri Architects took cues from 'engawa'—a type of traditional Japanese veranda.
