The Brass Gear Train was developed by MetMo as a hand-assembled kinetic object that demonstrates gear reduction through a compact mechanical design. Precision CNC-machined brass gears are arranged to produce a 16,384:1 reduction ratio, allowing the upper gear to rotate rapidly while the lowest gear moves almost imperceptibly. Each stage doubles the torque of the previous gear, transforming a fundamental engineering principle into a tactile demonstration. The gears are mounted on a hard-anodized aluminum base, while a removable alignment pin secures the assembly when not in use.
The gear train can also be operated in reverse, with the lower gears generating increasing resistance as mechanical advantage rises through the system. Reinstalling the alignment pin requires every gear to return to a precisely aligned position, creating an interactive mechanical puzzle.
