Glossy Interlocking Boxes

Bohinc Studio Explores Geometric Shapes and Lacquer Colors

Bohinc Studio creates a line of boxes using a traditional Japanese lacquer made from tree sap by the name of "urushi." Using that lacquer, the design studio draws in tree wood and cotton materials to ultimately construct a line of glossy boxes that explore geometric concepts. Founder Lara Bohinc was inspired by her visit to Wajima, Japan, where she created two boxes from Katsura tree wood and coated it with cotton before applying multiple layers of urushi. For her design studio, she gives the traditional process a contemporary update -- she plays with geometric shapes and replaces the Japanese black and red lacquer tones for pastel hues.

The pastel lacquers were created by Nakakado and the duo developed two boxes in total. The first box is entitled 'Three As One,' where there is a larger compartment, as well as a smaller one, both interlocking with one another. The second box is called the 'We Are Family' box and it is connected to a small circular compartment. The boxes are designed to stand alone, or they can come together as a sculptural item.
