The Blackbirds Project in Echo Park has transformed a small land in eastern Los Angeles into a high-density micro-neigborhood.
Instead of creating a high-rise or row of houses, architect Barbara Bestor re-imagined the notion of community and created something that fuses both ideas. Because most people want to live in the city, Bestor focused on "re-densifying." The Blackbirds project is meant to attract city dwellers, and is in walking distance from stores, cafes and restaurants.
The true innovation in the homes would be its construction. The 18 units are further clustered into nine units, which are extremely minimal and simple in design. Each has an open-concept space, with large floor to ceiling windows. The theme of co-housing is made apparent with a community green space as well as a "live street" instead of a parking lot that encourages all types of transport.
