The Beosound Tableau is a wall-mounted speaker concept by Mårten Malmnäs, developed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen. Created as a graduate project at the Umeå Institute of Design, the concept positions audio as the focal point of the living space rather than a background appliance. Early research included design probes, which informed eight exploratory concepts before the project was refined into its final direction through prototyping and user testing.
The speaker replaces conventional screen-based controls with the Sonic Token, a tactile interface developed through Wizard of Oz testing that enables music navigation through physical interaction instead of visual menus. Full-scale mock-ups were used to evaluate the concept and refine the interaction model. It is designed for wall installation; the speaker emphasizes material presence alongside sound reproduction.
