Studio101 Architects designed a beachfront property at Point Lonsdale, Australia.
The architects made use of the coastal location by designing a floor plan that followed the natural topography of the site. It involved linking three pavilions via a circulatory spine, effectively creating an efficient layout. The primary living space, which contains the kitchen, living and dining areas, is located in the norther pavilion, which hovers above a masonry platform. The position allows for increased solar exposure and access to beautiful views.
The exterior of the pavilions are coated in White Cypress timber, which complements the concrete blocked walls. The block work spine has the special function of establishing a continuity between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Operable glazing (done with Argon gas for greater sustainability) and louvre windows ensure the flow of ventilation, as well as create a balance between the levels of openness and intimacy of the space.
