Alessandro Gallo Sculpts People as Birds and Beasts

In these sculptures, Italian artist Alessandro Gallo depicts everyday people as human animal hybrids. Gulls sit patiently on a bench. A sparrow talks on his phone. Ungulates and lizards ride the subway. Such scenes are usually relegated to cartoons and over-zealous stays in Vegas.

There is something oddly natural about these works. Obviously, animals do not usually exhibit such human behavior, but the way each sculpture is posed makes such behavior seem regular and ordinary. This doesn't mean they easy to ignore, though.

One sculpture depicts a lizard intently engrossed by its tablet PC. Were it not a reptile, such behavior would be commonplace. One might even walk past it without much regard until they registered that they just saw a lizard using a tablet PC; hence, the appeal of the sculptures.
