The Aghajoon Kitchen Restores a Rural Communal Cooking Space

Aghajoon Kitchen is a public facility in Khalilabad, Iran, designed by SONG Architects to replace a dilapidated, roofless kitchen previously used for communal meals and ceremonies. The design uses a large single steel-truss arch clad in local brick to define a vaulted hall that improves hygiene, shelter, and social function while resonating with existing village architecture.

The southern façade and internal axis are accentuated with turquoise-tile surfaces that guide circulation toward a central basin area used for cleaning pots and communal preparation. The building is organized across three levels: a basement for storage, mechanical services and a women’s ablution room; a ground floor as the main cooking and social space; and a mezzanine rest zone reached via tile-lined stairs.

Ventilation and light are achieved through cubic skylights on the roof and a perforated east wall that helps cool the basement. Materials such as brick, mud-plaster, tile and steel are used to provide structural stability, thermal comfort and cultural coherence within the village fabric.
