Okuwada Architects Designed a Hillside House with Seaside Views

Osaka firm Okuwada Architects Office designed a hillside house in the Japanese vacation town of Shirahama. The single-bedroom home features a glazed wall that looks towards the Pacific Ocean.

The home is built on forested, sloping terrain, with the exception of the fourth elevation, which looks towards the ocean. The architects didn't want the home to visually intrude on the beautiful surroundings, so they decided on an understated single-storey profile and a pitched roof. Architect Takeshi Okuwada explains, "Like drawing a line along the mountains, I set the height of the house to feel the beauty of the horizon of the sea."

The home is oriented towards the south end of the site, making it so that one is walking towards the ocean when approaching from the north. The facade that faces the water is, for the most part, glazed to optimize for the view.
