SOM Creates the New 28&7 Building in Manhattan's Chelsea

Architecture studio SOM unveils a look at its latest design in the form of the 28&7 building found in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. It is a 12-story office building that is defined by black-glazed terracotta that has been created to complement its surroundings. The ceramic material was given the glazed finish and then further polished to create what appears to be a smooth and reflective surface.

Design partner at SOM Chris Cooper explains that "The black sheen in the glazing has an elusive surface quality that changes depending on the time of day, much like the glass. As a contemporary interpretation of a historic typology, the facade design is an honest expression of the structure, construction and use. The resulting tactility of the facade feels more comfortable and inviting than the sleek counterparts all in glass."
