The Yakisugi collection, a new series of light fixtures designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates for Czech glass brand Lasvit, might look like regular frosted glass from afar. However, as one approaches they'll notice the clever and impressive design of the glass pendant lamp shades: the long, roughly rectangular glass columns look like charred firewood.
Kengo Kuma used a clever technique to create the glass collection. The designers took dry, hollow wood molds that hadn't been burnt, and blew molten liquid glass into them. As the liquid glass filled the mold, it burned it almost immediately, and the charred pattern was thus imprinted on the glass when it cooled. After the glass was completely settled and hardened, the designers simply burned away the wood itself and were left with the glass molds.
The collection gets its name from the Japanese art of yakisugi, which involves charring wood to make it last longer outdoors.
