The WWF Call of Nature Initiative Changed the Sound of Recess Bells

The sound of a recess bell is instantly recognized by kids and teachers in the school yard, but the WWF Call of Nature (L'Appel de la Nature) initiative saw the familiar metallic tone changed into the calls of threatened species. To connect French primary school children to nature and turn a playful moment into a wildlife lesson, WWF worked with Saatchi & Saatchi France to launch this campaign in more than 4,000 cities and over 6,300 schools. On Mondays, kids heard the Boreal lynx, the whiskered tern on Tuesday, a wolf on Thursday, and the sperm whale just before the start of the weekend.

As part of Call of Nature, educational kits were supplied to teachers, featuring engaging activities like stories, quizzes, games, and dedicated content for each animal.

Trend Themes

  1. Sensory-based Environmental Education — Integrating real-world sounds and multi-sensory materials into school routines creates immersive learning moments that redefine how children perceive and retain conservation knowledge.
  2. Gamified Classroom Learning — Playful, themed activities and quizzes tied to recurring schedule cues turn routine transitions into recurring engagement loops that can reshape curriculum design around retention and motivation metrics.
  3. Localized Species Awareness — Tailoring content to regional fauna fosters personal relevance and community connection, enabling hyper-local storytelling that can shift funding and attention toward nearby conservation priorities.

Industry Implications

  1. Educational Technology — Platforms that deliver scheduled audio, interactive kits, and teacher resources offer opportunities to embed conservation content into daily school workflows and personalize learning at scale.
  2. Audio Branding and Sound Design — Designing recognizable, emotionally resonant sound cues for public spaces and institutions presents pathways to repurpose sonic identity for awareness campaigns and experiential education.
  3. Environmental Nonprofit Conservation Education — Organizations that combine outreach with curriculum materials and community partnerships stand to expand engagement models that convert awareness into localized stewardship efforts.
