Canadian architect Alain Carle updated 'L'Écran,' a weekend residence located in Quebec, with extensive cedar paneling. Against the black-painted brick, the cedar calls attention to the terraces, windows and entrances of this sprawling property.
The architect used the awkwardly-shaped site to his advantage, creating a floor plan that optimizes for the surrounding views. He erected a series of walls that redirect focus from the busy streets, towards the lake. Severing the home's relationship with the street allowed the architect to maintain the "geometrical complexity" of the site.
The timber and steel building is bolstered with recycled brick; however, all the surfaces are painted black, offering consistency and cohesion with the rest of the exterior. The cedar panels work to break up the uniformity.
