Wearable Sculptures Create New Relationships with Surroundings

The built world around us is generally something one can move in and out of freely, so this project, Wearable Sculptures, really alters the way people interact with structural materials. In terms of apparel, these unusual wooden creations force an unnatural stiffness in the body that pushes the boundaries of comfort. And in considering the wearer's relationship with her environment, the pieces drastically affect one's activities and the way that one moves about buildings.

Tracy Featherstone's Wearable Sculptures cause people to find new routes throughout houses as they're constrained to walk sideways or bend over when passing through doorways and down narrow corridors. But what they do offer the body is an unfamiliar illusion of stability and rigidity that most articles of clothing cannot, changing one's perspective on his physique and concept of the stationary nature of structures.
